Diani Masters back to old format!

The annual Diani Beach Masters Golf Championship will from next year revert to its original format of being a Pro-Am tournament.

Leisure Lodge Resort chief executive officer, John Kioko Mutua, said he had received many requests from some of the Kenya's golfers to return the Diani Beach Masters (DBM) to its original format that allowed a big number of business personalities, leading amateurs and Kenyan professionals to play together in a four-day set-up.  

"From now on, you will have the DBM the way you have always wanted it to be,'' Mutua said during the prize giving ceremony after this year's tournament that was sponsored by Tausi Assurance Company at the weekend.
The weekend's competition, which was also part of the Kenya national golf team's trials for the World Amateur Team Championships and the East African Challenge Cup in Rwanda, attracted a star-field of 120 players who included 18 from Tanzania led by Tanzania Golf Union chairman Dioniz Malinzi.  

Mutua thanked Tausi Assurance for sponsoring this year's tournament.

Speaking on behalf of the sponsors, a company director, Rupinder Singh Sehmi, said Tausi Assurance was very delighted to have been part of this year's Diani Beach Masters.

This year's the 36-hole event was won by South Africa based Stefan Andersen who produced a one under par 71 in the final round for a total of level par 144 to clinch the hotly contested Green Jacket and the overall winner's trophy.

His prize was accompanied by a top class Golf Driver in Kenya's most popular Golfer of The Year (GOTY) tournament where Andersen also earned eight points towards the GOTY series.

Enroute to his one-shot victory from day one leader Boniface Simwa, Andersen had birded three holes and dropped two shots, while Simwa who on the right track until he a couple of bogeys for a final round 77 to finish second on 145.

Muthaiga's Collins Omondi was third on 147.
