Mombasa is so old that no one knows exactly when the city was founded. We do know for certain, however, that the name was first mentioned in the papers of the Arab cartographer and geographer Al-Idrisi (1100-1166), who referred to Mombasa as an important center for trade in ivory, millet, sesame and coconuts. The port city was under the influence of the Chinese (1415) and Portuguese (16th century), and in the 18th and 19th centuries it frequently changed hands between the Omani, Portuguese and British. Eventually, it fell under the control of the British and Mombasa became the capital of the British East Africa Protectorate. In 1963, Kenya gained independence and both Mombasa and the capital Nairobi were able to develop into indispensable links in a new nation.
